Making a
difference

“You have to learn to win
with what you’ve got…”

The Aboriginal Sports Circle of the Western Arctic (ASCWA) is proud to announce the 2008 ASCWA Award Winners:

  • 2008 Athlete of the Year - Colton Yee, Hay River
  • 2008 Coach of the Year - Tom Williams, Yellowknife
  • 2008 Community Builder Award - Ricky Andrew, Tulita
  • 2008 Culture Award - Inuvik Drummers and Dancers, Inuvik
  • 2008 NAIG Team Builder Award - Ian Legaree, Yellowknife

Each year ASCWA honors individuals for the positive difference they are making in their respective communities and regions. One of ASCWA’s goals is to create an award program to recognize and give credit to our many community builders of the NWT. Those individuals who have continually shown dedication and community involvement, and have made significant contributions through sport, recreation and culture.

The RCMP presented a special award to Corporal Maria Williams of the Behchoko Detachment, for her outstanding contributions to community work.

The Native Communications Society of the NWT also presented an award of special recognition to the CKLB Junior Radio Reporters; Becky Steen of Tuktoyuktuk, Ryan Beaver of Fort Smith and Marvin Apples of Behchoko.

“You have to learn to win with what you’ve got or you don’t win at all,” said former NHL Coach and keynote speaker Ted Nolan. Ted Nolan was in Yellowknife to also address the RIGHT CHOICE 2008 Sport Leadership Youth Conference.

Those in attendance and the award winners all help further promote ASCWA’s Vision – All Aboriginal people in the NWT will have the opportunity to participate in sport and recreational experiences at a level of involvement they find meaningful and valuable.
