| Enthusiasm
It was a regular Monday morning when six year old Jason headed out to catch the school bus. However, within minutes he was back home.
“Mom”, declared Jason, “I’ve quit school. It’s too long, it’s too hard and it’s too boring!”
Without hesitation his mom retorted, “you have just described life.”

Definitely there are times when we want to quit a job, a relationship or a project. It is precisely during these times that, instead of quitting, we need to get quiet and review our priorities, our objectives, our values. Is what we are planning on quitting stealing time from family relationships or desired goals? If so, then perhaps quitting is the answer.
However, if quitting is not an option, then adding a little enthusiasm will make life more rewarding.
Henry Thoreau, the American philosopher, employed enthusiasm every morning. Upon awakening he would take a moment to tell himself good news. His list of thankfulness included having a healthy body, an alert mind, interesting work, a bright future and the respect of many people.
Likewise, reviewing our physical, mental and relationship assets will flavor our days with joy.
Usually when I’m driving alone, I listen to the radio or play a CD. However, other times I prefer to drive to my destination silently. It gives me a chance to think. During one such “thinking session” my thoughts became pessimistic. I began finding fault not only with myself and others, but certain situations. I could sense my mood getting blacker and blacker. Thankfully, optimism conquered my negativity reminding me that I had a choice. I could either think of life’s rights or wrongs. As I redirected my thoughts to happier musings, both joy and enthusiasm returned to carry me through my day.
Besides, acknowledging his complaints about school, Jason’s mom encouraged her son to view each day as an adventure. Then, she walked him back to the bus stop and watched him climb aboard.
Similarly, admitting our discouragements may be helpful. However, let’s not stay dispirited, but board the bus of enthusiasm and enjoy the bright side of life.
