The Bright Side

with Gail Northgrave

A tribute to mothers

Mothers. Do you know that you are extremely powerful? Indeed, even into our old age and beyond the grave we influence our loved ones. We are treasure houses dispensing either life or death giving attitudes.

In her book, “Mother - Daughter Wisdom”, Christiane Northrup, M.D. writes, “our bodies and those of our daughters were created by a seamless web of nature and nurture, of biology informed by consciousness that we can trace back to the beginning of time.” She also adds, “every daughter contains her mother and all the women who came before her.”

Northrup’s words hold a lot of truth. However, when we reach adulthood, we have a responsibility to examine our childhood beliefs. Rather than blame our parents for imperfections, it is more profitable to build on the strengths from our heritage and change or eliminate those which are not rewarding.

Although I do not know all my women ancestors, I am grateful that both my grandmother and mother were rebels. When my mom fell and broke both her shoulders, doctors informed her, “You will never again be able to play golf”. What did my mother do? She played golf.

Similarly, my grandmother ignored the doctor’s predicted death remarks about her premature son. Instead, she kept my uncle alive on a makeshift incubator - her oven door.

Yes, I am a rebel. It runs in our family. I see it in my own daughter, my sisters, my nieces and I am proud of them. Moreover, the women in my family do not allow fear to conquer us. Instead we conquer fear. When told to quit, we keep on fighting for our ideals and beliefs.

Women are life givers. Our minds are like canvases. Whatever we put in them, be it in the way of books, movies, or television programs our loved ones and the rest of the world will eventually view. Therefore, let’s continue to keep our hearts and minds filled with love, faith and joy. Thus, we will bring spiritual, emotional and even physical healing to ourselves, our families and a grieving world. Happy Mother’s Day.
